What is Hypnotherapy? Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of clinical hypnosis (as opposed to entertainment/stage hypnosis) for the purposes of behavior modification, pain/stress relief, resolution of fears and phobias and to aid in the natural process of childbirth. (See Hypnosis Checklist).
| How does it work? Under the suggestions of a trained, professional, certified hypnotherapist, your subconscious mind is encouraged to come to the foreground of your thoughts. Your conscious/waking mind is persuaded to rest. What you might call your “Inner Self”, “Little Voice Within”, “Spark of the Divine”, or “Spirit” will calm the chatter of emotions and feelings that clutter your conscious waking mind. You are never out of control and you can always just open your eyes and stop the process, if you want to.
| What does it feel like? Imagine the sensation you would feel if while staring into the flames of a fireplace or campfire you begin to feel really relaxed. And if someone offered you a drink, you might think to yourself, silently, “That’d be cool.” But you are far too relaxed to raise your hand for the glass, much less tear yourself away from the flames. You could still think about taking a drink but you were so mellow you really didn’t care to break that delicious feeling. But, you could have, if you really wanted to. Each time you are hypnotized, your waking or conscious mind will relax more and more deeply and you will feel more tranquil.
